Recycling Steps
If your curbside program accepts #1 plastic bottles:
- Clean any leftover dressing from the bottle. Salad dressing contains oils and, in some cases, dairy ingredients that can contaminate recycled plastic.
- Soap and warm water can be used to clean the bottle.
- Rice, soap, and water are another cleaning option. Add dried rice to the bottle along with a pump of dish soap and warm water. Swirl the rice and water for 30 seconds, leave it on the counter for five minutes and continue swirling until the remaining dressing is gone. Empty and rinse.
- Dry the container.
- The plastic label can be left on the bottle or removed.
- Place the bottle directly into the recycling bin. Do not bag your plastic recyclables, they will be pulled from the waste stream and sent directly to a landfill.
- You’re done and you made a difference for the planet!
If you drop #1 plastic bottles at a transfer station:
- Follow the cleaning steps above.
- The plastic label can be left on the bottle or removed.
- Place the bottle directly into the correct recycling bin at the transfer station. Do not bag your plastic recyclables, they will be pulled from the waste stream and sent directly to a landfill.

#1 Plastic Explained
#1 Plastic clamshell packaging is common across the United States and is accepted by many local recycling programs in and around major metropolitan areas. Although most recycling programs accept #1 Plastic bottles, some may not accept molded clamshell containers because they are currently incompatible with their recycling systems.
The recycling center will separate your bottle from other types of plastic, wash them (again), and shred them before melting them into a resin. The end product is a plastic pellet that can be used to make new products. Most recycled #1 plastic is used in clothing, though it can also be made into new food packaging, as well.
